API's core mission includes promoting safety and influencing public policy to support a strong U.S. energy sector. The organization has developed over 800 industry standards recognized for their technical rigor, covering areas such as contamination control, engineering practices, and legal compliance. Additionally, API offers certifications and training programs to improve industry competence and safety, exemplified by the API Energy Excellence program.

API also engages in advocacy, representing industry interests before government bodies and regulatory agencies. Through research and education, it funds studies on economic and environmental aspects of the petroleum industry, making it a central authority in the sector.
