The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is an independent agency dedicated to the safe and responsible development of energy and mineral resources in Alberta, Canada. Established in 2013, the AER consolidates regulatory functions to create a streamlined system for energy development. It operates at arm�s length from the Government of Alberta and is governed by an appointed board of directors.
The AER regulates various energy resources and infrastructure, including pipelines, oil and gas wells, geothermal facilities, and coal mines. Its responsibilities encompass the entire life cycle of resource development, from application and exploration to decommissioning and reclamation. The AER also manages water allocation, public lands, and environmental protection, ensuring compliance with multiple provincial acts. It serves a diverse range of stakeholders, including energy companies, government bodies, Indigenous communities, and the general public, aiming to balance economic benefits with public safety and environmental stewardship.
