Anadarko Petroleum Corporation was a prominent independent oil and gas exploration and production company, founded in 1959. It focused on exploiting natural gas and oil reserves in the Anadarko Basin, which spans parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado. The company became public in 1986 after being spun off from Panhandle Eastern Corporation.
Anadarko specialized in the exploration and production of oil and natural gas, with a strong presence in both onshore U.S. plays and offshore deepwater production, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico. The company expanded its operations internationally, including projects in Mozambique and Algeria. Its product offerings included crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids. Anadarko served a diverse range of customers, including utility companies and refiners, through various sales and long-term contracts. In 2019, Anadarko was acquired by Occidental Petroleum, concluding its independent operations.
