Basrah Gas Company (BGC) is an Iraqi joint venture formed in 2013, comprising Iraq�s South Gas Company, Shell, and Mitsubishi Corporation. The company plays a vital role in Iraq's energy strategy by investing in natural gas resources, reducing gas flaring, and promoting energy independence. BGC serves as the main gas processing hub in Iraq, processing associated natural gas from major oilfields, including Rumaila, West Qurna 1, and Zubair.
BGC produces dry gas for power generation, enough to supply approximately 3.5 gigawatts of electricity, benefiting over three million households. The company also produces Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for domestic use, meeting over 80% of Iraq's demand and transitioning the country from a net importer to a net exporter of LPG. Additionally, BGC generates condensate for heavy vehicles and factories. The company has significantly reduced gas flaring, capturing over 60% of associated gas and preventing more than 160 million tons of CO2 emissions, showcasing its commitment to environmental protection and economic diversification.
