Encana Corporation was a prominent Canadian independent petroleum company, established in 2002 through the merger of PanCanadian Petroleum and Alberta Energy Company. It quickly became the largest independent petroleum company globally by market capitalization and production. Initially headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Encana focused on natural gas production, producing approximately 4.4 billion cubic feet of gas equivalent per day, with over 80% being natural gas.
The company transitioned its operations over time, moving from Canadian markets to U.S. shale plays. In 2009, Encana split its oil business, creating Cenovus Energy, and continued to focus on natural gas. In 2019, it relocated its headquarters to Denver, Colorado, and rebranded as Ovintiv Inc. in 2020, marking a strategic shift towards a diversified energy portfolio that included oil and bitumen recovery. Encana served a wide range of customers in the energy sector, with significant operations in both Canada and the United States.
