PowerCo SE is a battery cell manufacturer based in Salzgitter, Germany, and a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, founded in 2022. The company focuses on developing and producing battery cells with a strong commitment to sustainability and innovation. PowerCo aims to lead in sustainable battery technology, particularly for the electric vehicle (EV) industry, by providing efficient and environmentally friendly battery solutions.
The company is establishing three large-scale gigafactories in Salzgitter, Germany; Valencia, Spain; and St. Thomas, Canada, with a combined production capacity of up to 200 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year. The Salzgitter plant, set to begin production in 2025, will have an annual capacity of up to 40 GWh, sufficient to power around 500,000 electric vehicles. PowerCo is also pioneering a new manufacturing process called Dry Coating, which significantly reduces energy consumption and factory space requirements, enhancing efficiency and sustainability in battery cell production. The company primarily serves the Volkswagen Group's automotive brands, supporting the transition to electric mobility.
