SAPREF, or South African Petroleum Refineries, is the largest crude oil refinery in Southern Africa, located in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Established in 1963, it historically accounted for about 35% of South Africa's refining capacity, processing approximately 24,000 tons of crude oil per day until 2022. Following the cessation of its refining operations, SAPREF transitioned to a petroleum import terminal, focusing on the Island View Terminal precinct.
Currently, SAPREF operates pipelines, storage tanks, and jetty facilities with a storage capacity of about 525,000 cubic meters. The company handles over 5 billion liters of liquid fuel annually, distributing products such as motor gasoline, diesel, kerosene, jet fuel, and various fuel oils via road, rail, and the New Multi-Product Pipeline. SAPREF prioritizes safety, environmental protection, and stakeholder engagement, reflecting its commitment to operational excellence. Future plans include an upgrade to expand capacity to 600,000 barrels per day, enhancing energy security in South Africa.
