The United States Social Security Administration (SSA) is an independent federal agency that manages Social Security programs, including retirement, disability, and survivor benefits. It plays a crucial role in providing financial support to millions of Americans, administering programs such as the Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). In fiscal year 2022, SSA disbursed approximately $1.2 trillion in Social Security benefits to 66 million individuals and $61 billion in SSI benefits to 7.5 million low-income individuals.

SSA offers a range of services, including monthly retirement payments, financial support for disabled individuals, and benefits for the families of deceased workers. The agency also issues Social Security numbers and provides customer service through a network of around 1,500 offices nationwide. With a mission to meet the evolving needs of the public, SSA is dedicated to delivering superior customer service and ensuring the security of personal information while continuously improving accessibility and service delivery.
